Correspondence, speeches, sermons, editorials, and other papers relating to Holloway's career as the first black letter carrier in the Post Office of Greenville, S.C., and his role as deacon in the John Wesley Methodist Church, including family letters written to the Holloway children away at college documenting the social, political, and economic life of Greenville's black middle-class during the 1930s and 1940s. Letter, 30 Oct. 1939, discusses election of a president for the local NAACP and cites the general condemnation of the Ku Klux Klan and its activities; various correspondence re the Holloway family history in nineteenth-century Charleston; and letter, 16 July 1941, re the arrival of Holloway's father in Greenville in 1877. Also including records, 1929-1947, of John Wesley Methodist Church, including minutes of meetings, financial records, and other church papers; letter, 28 Nov. 1942, written from the annual meeting of the S.C. Conference of the Methodist Church, re profitable year for farmers reflected in ected in the large amount of money collected from congregations. Scrapbook, 1931-1947, re material written for black newspapers, including editorials, articles, and letters to editors documenting Holloway's opinions on politics, education, religion, temperance, and the needs of the black community; also including clippings re political developments in the area, such as the suicide of a prominent Republican party leader. Undated essays, including a description of Clark [Atlanta] University, ca. 1884-1887; list of "Important real estate owned by Colored people [in Greenville]"; and editorials encouraging public support for local black newspapers, such as the Southern Crusader.
